Learn more about deep culture

Deep culture seminars are designed for anyone who works in international settings, lives or travels abroad, faces issues of diversity in their personal/professional life, or simply seeks to grow through intercultural experiences. Seminars focus on various aspects of deep culture, the out-of-awareness cultural conditioning which influences our thinking, feelings and communication patterns. Seminars develop effectiveness for those working in international environments, encourage cultural and personal self-understanding, and show how to deepen the learning experiences that come from travel and life abroad.

Participants learn about recent research into deep culture and apply this knowledge to their own intercultural experiences. Participants will learn about deep culture’s powerful yet subtle effect on communication, values, relationships, identity, and more. They will learn to decipher subtle deep culture difference and learn how to apply deep culture lessons in their everyday life. Activities help participants develop sasshi– a Japanese term that refers to the ability to successfully “read” a situation and to empathize with others. The challenge of doing this with people of diverse backgrounds is seen as an opportunity for increased self-understanding. The emphasis throughout is on applying deep culture lessons to the personal and professional challenges of our increasingly globalized world. Successful completion of four seminars leads to the Level one Certificate of Deep Culture Learning. Advanced seminars can lead to Level two Certificate of Deep Culture Learning, Education and Training.

 Level One Deep Culture Seminars

  • Discovering Deep Culture: This is an introductory seminar which provides a foundation for understanding deep culture and its importance in cultural and self-understanding. Current research into deep culture is introduced. Activities focus on becoming aware of deep culture’s influence in our everyday lives, both at home and abroad.
  • Intuitive logics: deciphering deep culture difference: This seminar helps participants understand cultural difference and diversity. Activities focus on learning to look beyond the surface of cultural difference and enter more fully into other worldviews. The process of learning about cultural others sheds light on one’s own values and deep culture programming.
  • Beyond culture shock: adaptation and deep culture learning: Adapting to travel or life abroad can lead to positive transformational change, but it can also lead to stress, culture shock and even increased prejudice. This seminar helps participants understand and successfully manage this powerful process.
  • Deep thoughts: culture, perception and cognition: Research in cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, genetics and intercultural communication has shed light on the biological bases of the intercultural experience. This seminar focuses on a scientific understanding of deep culture as it is experienced in our everyday lives.
  • Deep culture practice: the inner journey: Intercultural experiences can lead to profound personal growth. This seminar focuses on this process and helps participants turn their travels into an inner journey. Participants learn practices designed to increase deep culture and personal awareness.

 Advanced Deep Culture Seminars

Advanced seminars are available for those who want to develop their intercultural leadership skills. They are designed for experienced travelers and expatriates, trainers, educators, managers, coaches, and others who are responsible for the intercultural development of others. Successful completion of all four seminars leads to the Level two Certificate of Deep Culture Learning, Education and Training.

  • Introduction to deep culture training and education: This seminar deepens participants' theoretical understanding of deep culture theory, and introduces an approach to helping others with deep culture learning. There is an overview of three deep culture tools: the PICO profiler, Deep Culture Dilemmas, the Deep Culture Coaching Tool.
  • PICO Intercultural Learning Assessments: Participants learn to use the PICO profiler, a psychometric tool which helps learners understand their own intercultural learning style. Participants learn about the own learning style, practice interpreting PICO profiles, and learn how PICO profiles can be used in educational and professional settings.
  • Deep culture difference materials development: This seminar focuses on the use of Deep Culture Dilemmas to help others understand how deep culture difference creates misunderstanding in intercultural contexts. Participants will practice creating their own Dilemmas-based materials  that can be used in their professional context.
  • Deep culture adaptation coaching: Participants learn to use the Deep Culture Coaching Tool and help individuals learn the most from their own intercultural experiences. There will be hands-on coaching practice and discussion of how to apply these skills into educational and professional contexts.
